A Word on Aseptic Mycology Lab Work
Whether you are an advanced mycologist or just getting started, a proper laminar flow hood will make a big difference in the lab. Remember to keep your work space as clean as possible. Wipe down and spray surfaces with then carefully spray the air with 70% isopropyl alcohol while exiting the room. Leave the flow hood on and step out of the room while the alcohol settles and cleans the air. Wipe down the surface again and make sure that you use good personal hygiene. Wear freshly laundered clothing and wash your hands thoroughly with warm soapy water. Rub your hands thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol (with or without gloves). Make sure that your agar dishes and most valuable inoculum are closest to the filter while the flow hood is running. Only leave them open for the minimum amount of time when making transfers.
